Lake Cooroibah Site

Cooloola Reserve

Our second site located in Cooroibah offers our students a wonderful opportunity to explore how the Australian Wallum Woodland responds to bushfires in areas where there is little human intervention.

Whilst the site was heavily burnt during the November 2019/2020 fires, the landscape responded effectively and is thriving with native species. In comparison to the Peregian Beach site, this area is a perfect example of how Wallum Woodland should be responding to bushfires and clear of invasive species.

In 2022, students from Gympie High underwent extensive transect studies in this area. This included the identification of species, descriptions of the environment (moisture, colours, decomposers, different soil and rock types), any wildlife observed, recording evidence of fire impacts, availability of sunlight and water, urban influence, predominant species and more. From this, the students came up with possible strategies to improve the sustainability of the (Peregian Beach) site and the benefits of these actions.
